What is NFA CSN?
NFA-CSN advocates for all College of Southern Nevada professional employees, including academic, administrative, and part-time faculty. In addition, it is the collective bargaining organization for full-time teaching faculty, counselors, and librarians. We are proud members of Nevada Faculty Alliance and affiliates of the American Association of University Professors, the American Federation of Teachers, and AFL-CIO. For over 40 years, since its incorporation in 1983 as a 501(c)6 professional membership organization, NFA has upheld the rights and values of academic freedom, tenure, shared governance, and due process at the eight colleges and universities comprising the Nevada System of Higher Education.
Our Story
The NFA-CSN chapter has helped its local members resolve employment disputes on salary, scheduling, supervision, etc., and navigate grievance and discipline procedures, providing limited legal assistance as warranted. Through public meetings, newsletters, workshops, and its members’ participation in the Faculty Senate and various college and department committees, CSN-NFA has always supported the faculty’s voice in shared governance and advanced faculty professionalism and high standards of academic excellence, thereby improving educational opportunities for CSN students.
In April 2016, with a majority vote of the full-time academic faculty saying “Yes!” to unionizing, NFA-CSN became NFA’s largest collective bargaining unit. On April 23, 2020, we made history for our dues-paying members and all our bargaining unit faculty when we concluded first-contract negotiations successfully!
Why Join Us?
If you are a full-time CSN academic faculty employee, you already belong to NFA CSN’s bargaining unit. As your authorized bargaining agent, NFA CSN owes you fair representation: you will benefit from a negotiated contract in the same ways that dues-paying members of NFA will. Nevada’s right-to-work law ensures that anyone who wishes to reap the no-cost benefits of others’ unionizing efforts can do so without suffering discrimination.
Even so, personal choices have political effects. Becoming a dues-paying member of NFA CSN helps faculty shift the balance of power in favor of our workplace rights. Adding your name to NFA CSN’s membership roster proves you do care to protect your own interests in such employment issues as salary equity, base pay raises, fair and transparent due process in discipline and grievance actions, and impartial third-party arbitration for contract enforcement. Above all, your NFA CSN membership tells everyone you care enough for your profession, your colleagues, and your students to unite in one voice that strives to improve our working conditions and our students’ learning conditions.
