NFA files lawsuit against CSN
On August 22nd, 2024, the Nevada Faculty Alliance (NFA) chapter, which represents full-time academic faculty at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN), filed a lawsuit against CSN and the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) for breach of contract and bad faith.
CSN Administration and CSN-NFA negotiated a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in 2022 to cover the period of 2022-2025. The NSHE Board of Regents, CSN administration, and CSN NFA agreed to the contract in 2022.
However, the CSN Administration chose to disregard a contract provision and underpaid faculty members in the summers of 2023 and 2024.
Thus, the lawsuit stems from the administration’s violation of the signed contract regarding faculty pay for the summer 2023 and 2024 sessions.
The administration arbitrarily canceled classes outside of CSN policy, chose to pay faculty at a rate lower than the one stipulated by the contract, and hurt students’ ability to complete coursework in the summer.
The CSN administration has repeatedly refused the CSN NFA’s repeated attempts to negotiate this issue, denied grievances submitted by affected faculty, and forced the CSN NFA to undertake the expense of filing this lawsuit. The CSN NFA remains committed to serving the students and community as they seek compliance with the contract signed by all parties.
CSN-NFA is the collective bargaining organization for full-time teaching faculty, counselors, and librarians employed at the College of Southern Nevada. We are proud members of Nevada Faculty Alliance and affiliates of the American Association of University Professors’ Collective Bargaining Congress. For 36 years, since its incorporation in 1983 as a 501(c)6 professional membership organization, NFA has upheld the AAUP rights and values of academic freedom, tenure, shared governance, and due process at the eight colleges and universities comprising the Nevada System of Higher Education.
